Why People Who Live Simple Lives Are Happier
80Everyone has heard the old saying, "Less is More" right? Many of us have looked at others and ask ourselves why people who live simple lives are happier and I have come to the answer through my own experiences.
Back two years ago I had a problem with alcohol and it went back from there many of years, but the thing about it was, I didn't think I had a problem at all. I had that Big "D" in my life called "Denial."
I have to say, I thought I was a happy person while drinking, but I now realize being sober, I was the most miserable, sad, and negative person you could know and never knew it until I became sober, which brings me to the reason of this hub.
When I drank I thought it was great and I would be able to conquer the world and have anything I wanted, at least my addicted mind told me this. I thought that by drinking alcohol would solve all my problems and make people that I knew look up to me and think I was cool.
Man, was I ever wrong. They looked up to me as one more drunk added to our society. I thought life would be simple and when drinking everything would be bright and cheerful.
I am living a simple life now once I have had sobriety under my belt again. i downsized big time and now living in a retirement community 55 +. No more hustle and bustle rat race for me anymore. I am where I have aways wanted to be, and that is living near the sea at the Jersey Shore.
Living simple and living happier than I have ever been. Anyone can live a simple life and be happy if you are willing to sacrifice and down grade from your present living style.
That is exactly what I did. No more mortgage, no taxes to pay and just living a simple live. i know now since I have become sober that material things mean nothing to me, but my happiness and the happiness of my family mean more than anything.
Back in the drinking days I thought material things were great and they are, but you have to pay for those beautiful expensive things. Happiness cost nothing!
No sober I appreciate life in general without all the bells and whistles. I have my home by the sea and thinking now how to leave my present job of 21 years and just get a little part time job to make ends meet and start to enjoy the only live I (we) have.
In my opinion, the simpler the better for me. I threw many things out and gave many things away when i sold my home to live at the Jersey Shore. No more clutter and no more hanging on to things I haven't looked at in 20 years dragging them from house to house with each move.
I can assure you that this is my last move and I want everything to be organized, clean and simple. No more things to trip over, just the things that we need for everyday living is good enough for me.
Anyone can live this simple and happy life. All you have to do is to get enough guts to make that change as I did. i took lots of thinking and worrying about if I were doing the right thing and the only way I would find out is to grab the bull by the horn and simply go for it.
That was the best decision I have ever made in my life.

Hellooo the beautifula dn good life. That pic of you and your wife is one of the most beautiful thing to see. That love and that peace are the necessities of life.
YOu think you have downgraded, actually you have upgraded to the best. Enjoy yourself and keep on sharing all that faith, positive energy with all of us. We all learn from each other and maybe knowing earlier is better, no???
Take care.
Love and peace
Great hub, very valuable lessons! Voted up.
Mark. You really make it sound so simple. You've cleaned the house and your insides, too. Blessings, Debby
Congratulations! You made it! It takes guts to turn your back on all the glitz and find Saturday at the dump exciting. We did it and have found ourselves adjusting to living with the "old folks" - being there ourselves (92 and 81 - heaven help us!). Old boaters - that was the life!
I agree.
I see so many people who laugh at me for living the simple life.
All the while they are working like slaves to surround themselves with material things they are so busy working for they can't enjoy them.
It must have taken tremendous courage and effort to reach this stage, but you make it sound simple. Hope others are inspired by your experience and clean their lives as well. Voted up and awesome!
Update: leaving the "old folks home". Too much money spent on things we don't need. Back to "keep it simple" - learn basic nutrition and eat accordingly.

What a coincidence. I was just telling my husband that I want the house empty. I don't want things. I just want everything simple. I don't have a lot of clutter, but "stuff" just seems to accumulate. I envy your little home by the sea (Jersey Shore), but for now I cannot make a change with kids still in school and college bills to pay.
Your writing is certainly very thought-provoking and your sobriety makes me so hopeful for the people I know who struggle with substance abuse. I for one am glad that you are so open with your struggles, successes, and point of view. This article is very worthy of a vote up and awesome.
