Why Is It So Hard Staying Clean And Sober

Updated on February 12, 2012

GETTING SOBER AND STAYING SOBER

Many people that have been addicted to alcohol and are in recovery often say, "why is it so hard staying clean and sober?"

I for one have sad this so many times, but I never broke down and picked up that drink, and the reason that I didn't is because I worked so hard to get where I was in my road to recovery and I wasn't about to start back at day number one.

Everyone that wants to be clean and sober needs to stay strong while they are in recovery and that means for the rest of your life. There will be so many things that come into your life throughout the time you are sober, but you need to stay strong and be stronger than the addiction that tried to ruin your life.

Yes, it is very hard I admit, but it always requires hard work to have any good come out of your work. I shouldn't have to tell you that nothing in life comes easy. Anything good requires hard work and that includes getting sober and staying sober.

For myself, I thought and I thought about getting clean and sober, but just kept on prolonging things in hope that I could just cut down on my drinking, but I had found that it was impossible to do.

When I mentioned that many things in life could drive you right back to drinking and could make you relapse, I mean it. There will always be ups and down in all of our lives, but we need to be strong and not let anything drive us back to where we were in live being addicted to alcohol.

Even though you have that urge to pick up that drink, stop and think of what you will be doing to yourself before you take that sip of alcohol. Think before you drink.

THE REASON IT IS SO HARD STAYING SOBER

There are so many reasons I can think of as to why it is so hard to stay sober and one of the main ones for those that just are having a tough time is being around your old drinking buddies. You really have to have some strong determination to stay sober when you are looking at your buddies drinking one drink after the other. The only way to escape that urge, is to stay clear from them until you think you can handle watching them drink. For some, you may never be able to be around those that drink alcohol.

For myself, I am fortunate that I can go into bars and be around those that are drinking alcohol such as parties and different functions that gave alcohol served. I truly believe, at least for me is this urge to drink is all in your mind.

You tend to think of all the so called great times you have had while drinking and getting drunk and think to your self that you may be missing out on those so called fun times. Believe me you can have just as much fun being sober and that is right from the horses mouth, which is me.

When I quit drinking alcohol my first thoughts were, " I am never going to be able to have a great time again being clean and sober. I sure did fool myself because I am having the time of my life now and I never have to worry about saying the wrong thing or worrying about how I am going to get to certain places because I have been drinking alcohol.

I am a free man now and I can come and go as I please without dragging along my crutch everywhere I go. You also can be a free person. Free of your demons. The only thing you have to do is to want sobriety back into your life and if you want it bad enough it will happen.
