How To Take Positive Steps Towards Quitting Drinking Alcohol

Updated on August 12, 2013

If you are a person such as myself that has an addiction alcohol, but wants to live a clean and sober life again then here are a few things to think about when you are getting reading to change your habits and life.

What I did when I was preparing myself for sobriety and getting ready for a huge life change was I sat and looked at my life as a whole and thought about where I would be in a half a year and then a year from that moment.

What I saw in my future was a steady decline in my health. A decline in my looks and an incline in my weight. I looked around and realized not only I was unhappy, but my wife and family were very unhappy as well. I could see it plain as day on the faces and then when I would open up one more beer they cringed in fear of what was in store for them the rest of the day or evening.

Before I started to notice these things changing in my life and all around me I really didn't much about anything except getting that next beer in my stomach.

How to take positive steps towards quitting drinking alcohol depends on one person and that person is YOU and ME. We are the only people that change our own lives and no matter what anyone says about our drinking, if we are not ready to surrender on our own terms than what said to us is a waste of time and breathe because we simply don't listen to those speaking. At least I didn't. I may have looked like I was paying attention, but I could care less what anyone said about my drinking habits or how I lived my life.

Getting back to taking positive steps towards quitting drinking alcohol is that the steps I have taken revolve around what I saw when looking at my own life. I didn't like what I saw about myself and certainly didn't like what I was doing to the only family I had and loved with all heart.

These people (my wife and family) didn't deserve what I had been putting them through. they deserve a good life and not worrying about how drunk I would get and if I would say anything to anyone that would come back and haunt me in the future.

The big thing here is that we are the ones to get ourselves out of the negative mood and thoughts and make our life a positive one and everyone associated with you. Most alcoholics I know including myself are pretty much negative people. They are forever crying, " Why is all this happening to me?" "Why isn't my life like everyone else?" "Why is it that nothing goes right for me?" There are million things that the alcoholic thinks and says because we think everyone is out to get us in a negative way. Living with negativity in your life there is no way anything will go right for you and I can reassure you on that from my experiences drinking alcohol.

Once I surrendered and got my life straightened out and became clean and sober everything began to turn around to all positive. Sure, it was a tough ride, but I promised myself and no one else but myself that I would never would pick up an alcoholic drink again for the rest of my life and I am a man of my word.

Many thing have been going wrong over the last year, but it was not enough to make me break and go back to the bottle. It will be a cold day in hell before that ever happens, believe me. I continued to think positive and keep telling myself, "I can get through this without my crutch."

TAKING THOSE STEPS

  • Look at your life and your future if you continue to drink alcohol.
  • Look at what your are doing to your family and friends by drinking and abusing alcohol.
  • Look at yourself in the mirror and see if you have changed in your appearance.
  • If you don't like what you see, then do something about it and quit drinking alcohol.
  • Things like the above should turn the light bulb on in your head and tell you that this must stop before you lose everything and possibly lose your own life from something that is totally controllable and really unnecessary.
  • Is it really necessary to get totally get blown out from drinking too much?
  • Think positive thoughts and continue to tell yourself that you deserve more than this silly addiction is giving you.

NOTE: ANYONE THAT KNOWS ME AND MY WRITING, I CONTINUOULY WRITE ABOUT THE ADDICTION TO ALCOHOL AND WRITE ABOUT 90 % OF MY ARTICLES AND HUBS ON JUST THAT. I WRITE MY LIFE AS AN ALCOHOLIC AND HOW I SURRENDERED TO MY ADDICTION ON MY OWN WITH THE HELP OF THE POWER OF PRAYER AND THE POWER OF POSITIVITY.
