Having The Urge To Drink When In Recovery
When a alcoholic makes up his/her mind to stop drinking alcohol is a wonderful thing and they should be very excited and proud of themselves. I know I was proud and still am by what I did and accomplished when I quit drinking alcohol. It was one of the best day of my life when I finally got out of the denial I lived in for so long and surrendered to my addiction.
I write about it and talk about much, but sometime I wonder if people get sick and tired of hearing me brag that I am now clean and sober and damn proud of it. If they do get tired of hearing me then they must have never had an addiction of their own or they would understand why I am like this by bragging that I am sober.
Anyone that takes that first step to sobriety and continues to make it long term sobriety needs to brag of their accomplishments as I do and will continue to do so until the end of my time here on earth. I am determined to get my point across to the world that anything is possible in life if you put your all to it and are determined enough and have the willingness and that strong desire to succeed, including surrendering to an addiction.
It is now going on almost two years being sober and having the urge to drink when in recovery crossed my mind several times in that time frame. Many things have happened in my life that would have driven anyone else back to the bottle, but I made that promise to myself that no matter what happens in my life from now on in, I will not break and go back to drinking to ease the pain or try and fix a problem by using alcohol.
I stuck to my guns and kept my promise to myself. I worked out those problems I had being sober with no crutch to lean on. Alcohol will not help a bit in anything in life, although it will help ruin your life if you let it.
What to Think of When the Urge Hits You to Drink Alcohol
When an alcoholic finally surrenders to their addiction, sometimes craving and urges come about and they think of having just one drink. They say to themselves, :just one drink should not hurt". I can tell you that yes, one drink to a alcoholic could be the ruins of them.
It is so hard to say No to a drink someone may have offered you, but just think before you drink. Think of all the hard work you have done to get where you are now being sober. You have gone through many hard days and nights thinking of drinking, but you stood your grounds and didn't reach for that bottle.
Anyone that has gone through this and stood their ground by not having their past alcohol demons take over their life again should be very proud of themselves for the accomplishments they have achieved through the last months or even years.
Many people that are alcoholics have had many horrible things happen to them while they are in the recovery process of their addiction. I can tell you when things come up that may send your life in a tail spin, sometimes makes you want to have a drink of alcohol. Many alcoholics think that by doing this and drinking alcohol when a problem arises is the fix all drug, and believe me it doesn't fix anything, it just makes things worse than it really is.
Be stronger than your addiction and whenever that urge or craving for alcohol comes about you think of all the hard work you did to get to where you are now being clean and sober. You will have wasted all those hard days, month and even years being sober by one harsh mistake by letting your past inner demons take over your body again.
Think positive and believe in yourself. Keep thinking, it is really worth that one drink which probably would turn into two, three and possibly more worth your relapse.
