How to Overcome Your Alcohol Addiction
Anyone that has a drinking problem may often ask themselves, "how to overcome your alcohol addiction." This addiction to alcohol seems to be a very hard thing to beat. I can tell you through my experience with drinking alcohol that it is indeed a hard thing to beat, BUT NOT impossible.
It is only as hard as you make it. If you are going to fight to stay sober you must give sobriety 110% of your heart and soul. Nothing is impossible in life and that include getting and staying sober.
You cannot cheat and have a drink every now and then. You MUST make the decision whether or not you want sobriety back into your life, or continue to be an alcoholic for the rest of your life.
Anyone in this world can overcome anything if you really want that one thing bad enough. When I finally surrendered to my addiction to alcohol, I knew in my heart I was ready and this wasn't the same feeling I had when I tried to stop drinking alcohol years before. Sure I said I will quit drinking, but I didn't have it in my heart to get sober. I wasn't ready for sobriety just yet.
I stopped for a about a year or so, but my body and my mind were always on the alcohol that I was Missing out on. I went to picnic and parties and it was pure torture watching every else drinking and having a great time as I sat there sober. That really bothered me so much. My mouth would water when I watch those people drinking one drink after another.
Now, I have been clean and sober for three years on October 27, 2012. I have a completely different outlook on my life and my sobriety. My mouth never waters watching others drink alcohol, and in fact I feel sad for them as they get more wasted as each alcoholic drink goes down their throat.
The look at me and ask me, "don't you even want one can of beer or a mixed drink?" My answer to them, and I might add, very proud to say it, is NO THANK YOU I stopped drinking alcohol three years ago.
I can't tell you how happy it makes me to be able to tell someone NO THANKS, I don't drink. It is the best feeling in the world in my opinion.
To be able to overcome your addiction to alcohol, it starts first with having the will, the desire and the pure determination to get and stay sober. If you don't have those things, and oh, one more thing, which would be having a Positive Attitude towards life and towards long term sobriety. Without those things sobriety may only last a very short time, and why is that you may ask? The reason is you are NOT ready to live a 100% sober life.
Overcoming Your Alcohol Addiction
How I Overcome My Addiction to Alcohol
These are a few things I did to help me overcome my addiction to alcohol and hopefully they will strike a cord with you in your quest to finding your own long term sobriety.
- FIRST you MUST want to get clean and sober and NOT BE FORCED into sobriety.
- You have to have a positive attitude in everything you do in life including, getting and staying sober.
- You have to have the will and determination to make this work once and for all and remain sober for the rest of your life.
- You must promise yourself that you will NOT pick up another alcoholic drink for the rest of your life, and if you do, you just may relapse as so many alcoholics do.
- If you are fine with that promise to yourself, than you have a great chance to finding your life and your sobriety again. If you have doubts about whether or not you can keep that promise, then you are NOT SURE if you want to be sober at all. (These statements I make are purely my opinions and what I experienced when I decided to stop drinking alcohol and live a life of sobriety.)
- You need to be stronger than your addiction and beat the temptation to drink alcohol, because there will be temptations and urges to drink alcohol in your journey to recovery, but you need to know the word NO and stay strong!
- There may be a time that you may have to say goodbye to your drinking friends and places you used to hang out at in order to not have that temptation or urge to drink.
- You have to think and worry about yourself, and if you have a spouse or family you and they are your first priority if you want this recovery process to work as you want it to.
- You just may have to give up some of things you used to do while drinking alcohol in order to change your life. Believe me, when you are clean and sober for some time and you look back at what you gave up in order to get and stay sober, you will thank yourself and others for their love and support for giving sobriety 110% of your life.
- You will learn and live a clean life that you may never had imagined when you were addicted to alcohol.
