Functioning Alcoholic
Have you ever heard of the saying, "I never knew he/she drank till I've seen him/she sober". That is so true because there are so many people that drink alcohol and really hide it well. They go about their everyday life just like someone that doesn't drink at all, but who are they really fooling?
A functioning alcoholic can go to work and never miss a day do to being hung over or just sick from drinking the night before. They perform at their job just as well as the next person. Little does anyone know that this person is an alcoholic.
They associate well with all their family and friends, but hiding their alcoholism from some. They are embarrassed of their addiction really, so they tend to keep it from certain people, but the real truth is they can't hide from themselves or their immediate family.
Maybe as time goes on those people will start to pick up on the alcoholic's life style.
For myself, I drank everyday and went to work like everyone else. Mind you, I sometimes didn't feel that great in the morning, but I went to work anyway. As the day goes bye we the alcoholics start to feel some what better and we are ready to start the process all over again when we get home from our job and maybe some start at their job. No one knows. This is one of the main reasons why I thought I had no problem with drinking alcohol.
I argued all the time saying, "what is the problem? I work, I do my duties around the house, cut the grass and everything a husband generally does, so why do you say I have a drinking problem?" That is how much I was in denial. So the functioning alcoholic may think the same. I'm doing what has to be done and I'm not hurting anyone, so we thought.
Well, that statement is totally false, because you are hurting many of people and the alcoholic doesn't even realize it. They are blinded to everything around them except when it comes to their addiction. They are really focused on that. It is their life line so they think. They truly think that they could not have a happy life without the drink. I'm stating these words because of my experiences with myself as a functioning alcoholic.
In my eyes, the word alcoholic, is so harsh of a word, but guess what, that word, and what I will always be and will be called, is an alcoholic. I have no one to blame but myself for having that word pinned on me forever.
So basically, an alcoholic can be a person living in the streets always drunk or someone that just drinks to stay drunk and those that are functioning alcoholic that do everyday life things.
